Former student arrested carrying handgun at Morristown High School
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — A former Morristown High School student was arrested after being found with a handgun on school grounds, officials announced Wednesday.
According to Morristown Mayor Timothy Dougherty, the incident began on May 8 when police received a tip, including a video and photo, showing a man entering 28 Clyde Potts Drive and removing what appeared to be a two-tone handgun from his waistband. The individual then concealed the weapon in a green tote bag before leaving the building.
An officer safety memo was then issued to all Morristown police personnel.
Days later, the same individual entered Morristown High School seeking to obtain his academic transcripts. School Resource Officer Christopher Little, who recognized the suspect from the safety memo, quickly intervened and detained him.
To ensure the safety of students and staff, Officer Little placed the individual in handcuffs. Authorities later confirmed an active warrant for his arrest. A search conducted during the arrest revealed a two-tone Smith & Wesson handgun with a defaced serial number concealed in the suspect’s satchel. The firearm contained a loaded magazine but no round in the chamber.
“I would like to formally thank Officer Little for his vigilance and professionalism in responding to this potential threat,” Mayor Dougherty said. “His swift recognition and appropriate response undoubtedly contributed to maintaining the safety of the school community.”
The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
