MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — An adult fox found in Mount Olive Township has tested positive for rabies, prompting local health officials to issue a public health advisory.
The fox was found in the area of Warwick Road and Triumph Court, according to the Mount Olive Township Health Department. The positive rabies test was confirmed Aug. 5.
Health officials said there is no known ongoing threat to the public but are urging residents to remain vigilant, take precautions around wildlife and report potential exposures immediately.
Rabies is a viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It can be transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal or when saliva from an infected animal comes into contact with broken skin or the eyes, nose or mouth.
The Health Department is advising residents to avoid touching, feeding or approaching wild or stray animals, even if they appear friendly, injured or unusually tame. Children and pets should be supervised outdoors, and dogs and cats should be kept current on their rabies vaccinations.
Residents are also advised to keep garbage containers securely covered and avoid leaving pet food outside, which can attract wildlife.
Wild animals displaying unusual behavior, including aggression, excessive drooling, disorientation or difficulty walking, should be reported to Animal Control or local law enforcement.
Anyone who has been bitten, scratched or had direct contact with the saliva of a wild or stray animal should immediately wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical evaluation, according to the Health Department. Potential exposures should also be reported to local health officials for guidance on whether rabies post-exposure treatment is recommended.
The Health Department said prompt medical care is critical because post-exposure treatment is highly effective at preventing rabies when administered before symptoms develop.
