Gottheimer celebrates MTA backing down on surge pricing

Will save hardworking commuters hundreds of dollars a year on Congestion Tax

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05) Thursday issued a statement in response to the MTA’s recent decision to abandon plans for surge pricing as part of the Congestion Tax.

This decision would have enabled the MTA to charge commuters an additional 25% through an Uber-style surge pricing scheme on any given day.

Gottheimer has been a vocal opponent of New York’s surge pricing plan for nearly a year.

“New York thought they could sneak through another way to whack hardworking families with its Congestion Tax cash-grab but got caught with their hand in the tax jar again. It’s time for the MTA to stop treating Jersey and New York drivers like their personal piggy bank. Thanks to the public outcry, we helped keep a lump of coal out of commuters’ stockings,” Gottheimer said.
