Gottheimer praises U.S. leadership in release of hostages from Gaza
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., on Monday praised what he called “great American leadership” following the release of hostages taken by Hamas militants on Oct. 7, 2023.
“For so many of us, today is long overdue,” Gottheimer said in a statement. “After more than two years of pain and uncertainty, I am deeply relieved that the remaining hostages held in Gaza are finally returning home to their families. I am thinking of the families who never gave up hope — and who are reunited today with those they’ve prayed for since that horrific day on October 7th.”
Gottheimer credited both President Donald Trump and the Biden administration for their roles in securing the release.
“Today is the result of great American leadership, led by President Trump and his team, and also the tireless efforts of the Biden Administration. I am grateful to them and to all of those who played a role in the hostage release,” he said.
The North Jersey Democrat also called for Hamas to disarm and relinquish governing authority in Gaza.
“We must now insist that, without delay, Hamas terrorists lay down their weapons and step aside from all governing responsibilities,” Gottheimer said. “I look forward to renewed regional cooperation, under an expanded Abraham Accords, with the goal of regional peace and security.”
Gottheimer added that he hopes the freed hostages and their families “can finally begin the long process of mourning and healing.”
