Gov. Murphy lifts state of emergency after I-80 reopens in Morris County

WHARTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — Gov. Phil Murphy on Saturday lifted the state of emergency declared in March following the collapse of abandoned mines that caused multiple sinkholes and voids along Interstate 80 in the Wharton area.

Murphy signed Executive Order No. 391, ending the emergency in Morris County at 5 p.m. Saturday. The action follows the full reopening of I-80, where all eastbound lanes reopened at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 21. All westbound lanes had reopened last Saturday, June 14 — 11 days earlier than anticipated, officials said.

The original emergency order, Executive Order No. 383, was issued March 8 after the mine collapses damaged portions of the highway.

Officials said the reopening marks the completion of repair work and stabilization efforts in the affected area.
