Included with the tax bills is a letter from Mayor Jerry DiMaio and the Town Council thanking residents for their continued support while highlighting municipal accomplishments over the past year.

According to the letter, the Town Council adopted a $13.7 million municipal budget in May. The local tax rate increased by 0.72 cents, or 1.04%, resulting in an increase of about $20 per year, or $1.64 per month, for the average home assessed at $275,000.

The letter highlights several completed projects, including upgrades at Town Hall, the resurfacing of multiple streets, stormwater drainage improvements on Fifth Street, resurfacing of the tennis and pickleball courts on Warren Street, installation of a digital scoreboard at the Arthur J. Sheldon Recreation Complex and improvements at the Community Center. It also notes the appointment of Bruce Tynan as Hackettstown’s new fire chief, the retirement of longtime Department of Public Works Supervisor Scott Armstrong and the unveiling of the town’s new logo.

The mailing also includes a breakdown of how municipal tax dollars are allocated. According to the town, 60% of the overall property tax bill supports the Hackettstown School District, while 19% goes to Warren County, 19% funds municipal government, 1% supports the county open space tax and 1% funds the municipal library tax.

Within the municipal budget, 24.06% is allocated to public safety, 14.49% to insurance, 10.53% to capital improvements, 10.32% to statutory expenses, 10.31% to the reserve for taxes, 8.61% to public works, 8.33% to general government, 3.17% to parks and recreation and 3.00% to utilities. The remaining funding is allocated to construction, court and public defender services, shared services, health services, land use and other municipal operations.
