Harmful algae bloom detected at Budd Lake Beach; public health advisory issued

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris county) — The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has identified a harmful algae bloom (HAB) along the shoreline of Budd Lake Beach, prompting a public health advisory from local officials.

According to the Mount Olive Township Health Department, water samples collected on June 16, 2025, revealed algae cell counts exceeding the state’s Health Advisory Guidance Levels. Officials emphasized that the analysis was limited to the beach shoreline and does not reflect the overall water quality of Budd Lake.

In response, advisory notices have been posted at public access points around the lake to inform residents and visitors of the potential health risks.

Health officials urge the public to follow these precautions:

  • Avoid direct contact with the water, including swimming.
  • Use caution during non-contact recreational activities like boating.
  • Do not ingest the water, and prevent pets or livestock from doing so.
  • Refrain from consuming fish caught in the lake.

Exposure to water affected by HABs may result in allergic reactions such as skin rashes, eye irritation, and respiratory discomfort.

The Mount Olive Health Department, in coordination with Aquatic Analysts, Inc. and the NJDEP, is conducting ongoing visual inspections. The advisory will remain in place until further testing confirms that algae levels have dropped below the state’s action thresholds.

For updates, residents can contact the Mount Olive Township Health Department at (973) 691-0900, ext. 7330, or visit the NJDEP’s HAB resource page at dep.nj.gov/hab.
