Honor and Remember group highlights fallen-service flag at Hunterdon County meeting

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Honor and Remember Inc. highlighted its mission and the Honor and Remember Flag during a presentation to the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 20, describing the flag as a year-round symbol honoring U.S. military service members who died while on active duty or as a result of their service.

New Jersey Chapter Director Richard Myers addressed commissioners during the board’s public meeting, county officials said, outlining the organization’s purpose and the history behind the flag.

“Richard’s presentation reflects why Honor and Remember exists,” said Director John E. Lanza. “Every fallen hero deserves to be honored, and every family deserves to know that their sacrifice is recognized, respected, and never forgotten. The Honor and Remember Flag is our nation’s promise to them.”

Myers said the organization recognizes fallen service members from every war, conflict and branch of the military since the nation’s founding. He said the Honor and Remember Flag is meant to fly year-round as a visible reminder of those who made the “ultimate sacrifice” and the families who continue to carry that loss.

The organization was founded following the death of U.S. Marine Cpl. George Anthony Lutz II, who was killed by a sniper on Dec. 29, 2005, while on patrol in Fallujah, Iraq, county officials said. His father, George Lutz, later sought a universal symbol dedicated specifically to honoring fallen service members, which led to creation of the Honor and Remember Flag, officials said.

Myers also discussed the organization’s sister program, Honor and Sacrifice, which is dedicated to recognizing fallen first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel, county officials said.

“These programs exist for one simple but powerful reason – to give back to the families who have given so much,” said Richard Myers, New Jersey Chapter Director for Honor and Remember Inc. “Whether it’s a fallen service member or a fallen first responder, Honor and Remember and Honor and Sacrifice assure families that their loved one’s sacrifice will always be acknowledged. Their names, their service, and their legacy will never be forgotten.”

The New Jersey chapter continues working with local, county and state leaders to expand awareness of the Honor and Remember Flag and encourage its permanent display. More information is available through the organization, and Myers invited Gold Star families to contact him directly.
