Hunterdon County prosecutor praises off-duty police chief who rescued woman from Delaware River

LEBANON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson is commending Lebanon Township Police Chief Jason Cronce for rescuing a woman from drowning while off duty on the Delaware River last month.

Robeson said Cronce was nearby on Aug. 17 when he saw a woman tubing on the river collide with an overhanging tree and get pulled under by a strong current. She became trapped beneath the tree and was unable to free herself.

Cronce entered the water and pulled her to safety, preventing her from drowning, authorities said. The woman, whose name has not been released, is recovering.

“This was an extraordinary act of courage,” Robeson said in a statement. “Chief Cronce’s selflessness and swift response reflect the very best of public service and a deep commitment to protecting the lives of others.”

The prosecutor’s office extended its gratitude to Cronce for his actions, saying the rescue highlights the vital role law enforcement plays in protecting the public both on and off duty.
