Hunterdon County resident recognized for winning New Jersey tree climbing championship

KINGWOOD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners has honored Jonathan Houghton, New Jersey’s State Tree Climbing Champion, recognizing his achievements in arboriculture and his recent performance on the international stage.

Houghton, a certified arborist and Kingwood Township resident, was presented with a proclamation during the board’s Dec. 2 meeting. He earned the statewide title earlier this year, a distinction awarded to arborists who demonstrate advanced technical skill, physical endurance and professional excellence. His victory qualified him to compete in the 2025 International Tree Climbing Championship held Oct. 17–19 in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he represented both New Jersey and Hunterdon County.

Commissioner John E. Lanza praised Houghton’s accomplishments during the presentation.

“Jonathan’s success reflects the very best of Hunterdon County — skill, integrity, and dedication. As a champion tree climber who has competed internationally, his achievements demonstrate exceptional talent and hard work in a demanding field. We are honored to recognize him and celebrate his commitment to excellence,” Lanza said.

At the international competition, Houghton competed in all five preliminary events against elite arborists from around the world. He finished sixth in the Ascent Event, an achievement county officials said highlights his advanced abilities and continued dedication to his craft.
