Hunterdon County sheriff warns against dangerous ‘doorbell prank’ trend

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County Sheriff Fred Brown is warning residents about the dangers of the viral “doorbell prank” trend, also known as “ding-dong-ditching,” citing recent tragedies across the country connected to the act.

In the past two years, several fatal incidents have been reported nationwide, including the shooting of an 11-year-old boy in Texas earlier this year, the deaths of three teenagers in California in 2023, and a murder charge in Virginia involving a homeowner who shot a teen participating in the prank. Officials said such incidents highlight the risk that what begins as a prank can be perceived as a home invasion or threat.

“This is not just a joke anymore,” said Sheriff Fred Brown. “What some may see as a harmless prank can quickly escalate into a deadly misunderstanding. Homeowners have the right to feel secure in their homes, and in today’s environment, people are on high alert. We don’t want to see any family in Hunterdon County suffer a loss because of something avoidable.”

The Sheriff’s Office urged parents to talk with their children about the dangers of participating in or encouraging the prank, warning that it could result in legal consequences, including charges of trespassing and harassment.

Sheriff Brown added. “We all want our children to enjoy being kids, but we also need to keep them safe. Educating our youth about the dangers of engaging in pranks being promoted online is important – A viral video is not worth a life.”
