Hunterdon County to offer free mental health training for veterans and families

RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County officials announced free Mental Health First Aid training sessions for veterans, military members and their families will be offered later this month in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month.

Hunterdon County Commissioner Shaun C. Van Doren said the county’s Division of Senior, Disabilities & Veteran Services partnered with the New Jersey Hospital Association to provide the training program.

“As liaison to the Department of Human Services, I am proud to support programs that expand access to mental health education and resources for our veterans and their families,” Van Doren said. “This training gives residents the tools to recognize when someone may be struggling and how to respond in a supportive and meaningful way. Mental health awareness and early intervention can make a real difference in someone’s life.”

The evidence-based program is designed to help adults identify signs of mental health and substance use challenges, provide initial support and connect individuals with professional care resources.

Officials said the training also addresses issues specific to veterans, active-duty military personnel and military families, including trauma, stress and stigma associated with seeking help.

Two sessions are scheduled for May 20 and May 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hunterdon County Health Department on Walter E. Foran Boulevard in Raritan Township. Lunch will be provided.

Participants will be trained on the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan, known as ALGEE, which includes assessing risk, listening without judgment, offering reassurance, encouraging professional help and promoting additional support strategies.

According to program information, nearly one in four active-duty service members show signs of a mental health condition, while veterans experience suicide rates significantly higher than non-veterans.

Officials said the 7.5-hour training course, valued at $170 per participant, is being offered free through grant funding provided by the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
