I-287 northbound to see daytime lane, shoulder closures next week as vegetation project begins, NJDOT says

NEW JERSEY — Daytime lane and shoulder closures are scheduled to begin next week on I-287 northbound as the New Jersey Department of Transportation launches a months-long vegetation safety management project across Morris, Passaic and Bergen counties.

From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, through Friday, Nov. 21, one lane and the shoulder will be closed daily between the Route 10 interchange in Hanover Township (milepost 39.1) and the New York state line in Mahwah (milepost 67.5). NJDOT said work will start in the right lane and shift to the left as crews progress.

Additional overnight closures are expected to begin the following week, taking place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday for several months. These nighttime closures will also begin in the right lane before shifting left.

Once work on the northbound side is complete, similar lane and shoulder closures will take place on I-287 southbound. The project involves clearing vegetation along approximately 28 miles of highway to improve visibility and enhance safety.

Motorists traveling through the work zone are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays.

The closures are part of a $732,000 federally funded maintenance project, which is expected to be completed in spring 2026.

NJDOT noted that the schedule may change due to weather or other factors. Drivers can check 511nj.org for real-time traffic and construction updates.
