Investigation underway after rail car incident seriously injures worker at Warren County facility

MANSFIELD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — An employee was seriously injured early Friday morning in an incident at the Borealis manufacturing site on Thomas Road in the Port Murray section of Mansfield Township, a company spokesperson told RNJ.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Oct. 10 and involved a rail car, Borealis confirmed. Emergency response protocols were immediately activated, and first responders provided medical care at the scene before the employee was transported to a hospital for further treatment.

“The emergency response protocols were activated promptly and executed effectively. The employee received immediate medical attention from first responders and was transported to the hospital for further care,” a Borealis spokesperson said in a statement.

The company said the cause of the incident remains under investigation. “We are working closely with the relevant authorities, including OSHA, to determine the circumstances and ensure all appropriate measures are taken,” the spokesperson said.

Borealis emphasized that “our top priority is the health and safety of our employees,” adding that no additional details would be released while the investigation is ongoing.

The Borealis Port Murray facility, located at 176 Thomas Road, is a compounding operation that produces polyethylene (PE) solutions for the wire and cable industry. The specialty site, which employs about 165 people, was acquired by Borealis in 1997 and manufactures materials used in medium- and high-voltage cable insulation and flame-retardant applications.
