Kean joins bipartisan call for House role in talks on expiring ACA premium tax credits
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ-07) has joined more than 30 House Republicans and Democrats in urging Senate leaders to include House members in negotiations ahead of next month’s Senate vote on expiring Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits.
In a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the lawmakers called for a coordinated effort between both chambers to quickly craft a bipartisan solution that would prevent families from facing large health insurance premium hikes.
“Bipartisan engagement across both chambers will be essential to crafting a health care proposal that can pass and be signed into law,” the members wrote.
The letter highlights growing concern that millions of families who rely on ACA premium tax credits could see significant increases in their health insurance costs if Congress fails to act before the credits expire.
Kean has made health care affordability a legislative priority in recent months. In September, he joined as an original cosponsor of the Bipartisan Premium Tax Credit Extension Act (H.R. 5145), which aims to extend the expiring credits and prevent steep premium increases for New Jersey residents and small businesses.
In October, Kean and a group of House Republicans also pressed Speaker Mike Johnson to take immediate action on the issue once the government reopened.
The new bipartisan letter was led by Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ-5) and Jen Kiggans (R-VA-2) and signed by colleagues from both parties across the country.
