Man charged after firing gun inside Phillipsburg home

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — A Paterson man was arrested Monday after police said he fired a gun during an argument inside a Phillipsburg home, sending a bullet through an exterior wall and into a neighboring residence.

Authorities said no one was injured in the incident, which occurred around 9:35 a.m. Sept. 15 on the 100 block of Fox Street. Officers responding to a report of a shot fired encountered a man leaving the residence who matched the description given to dispatchers.

Investigators determined that the suspect, identified as Rashad A. McCaskill, 40, fired a weapon after a verbal argument. The bullet traveled into the adjoining residence, where two people were present, and lodged in an interior wall, according to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officers recovered a loaded Glock 9mm handgun and a high-capacity magazine at the scene. McCaskill was arrested, processed, and lodged in the Warren County Correctional Center.

He was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree certain persons not to possess a weapon, fourht-degree hindering apprehension, fourth-degree possession of a large-capacity magazine, and two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Second-degree crimes in New Jersey carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison, while fourth-degree crimes carry a maximum of 18 months.

The investigation was conducted by the Phillipsburg Police Department.
