Man charged in Hunterdon County gas station burglary

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A Pennsylvania man has been charged in connection with the burglary of a Shell gas station in Milford earlier this year, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson and Holland Township Police Chief Sean Gutsick announced Thursday.

Authorities said an employee arriving for work on March 24 found the gas station had been broken into overnight. Security footage showed a suspect using a small sledge-style hammer to smash the front glass, enter the business, and steal tobacco products and cash before fleeing.

Following a joint investigation, Chad J. Hefter, 42, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, was identified as the suspect. He has been charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree theft, and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Hefter is currently being held at the Chester County Jail in Pennsylvania on additional burglary charges from the same timeframe, officials said.

Third-degree charges in New Jersey carry possible penalties of three to five years in prison and fines of up to $15,000, while fourth-degree charges can result in up to 18 months in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
