Man sentenced to prison for firearm charges in Sussex County
NEWTON, NJ (Sussex County) – A New York man was sentenced to state prison for firearms charges in Sussex County, according to Acting Sussex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.
Alfred Scarpa, 50, of Chester was sentenced on Dec. 8 before the Honorable Michael C. Gaus, J.S.C. at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton, Murray said.
Scarpa was sentenced to state prison for a period of 8 years with a mandatory period of parole ineligibility of 5 years, with a credit for 190 days jail already served. he must submit a DNA sample and pay $530 in mandatory fees and penalties, Murray said.
Scarpa pled guilty to second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun without a valid carry permit, second-degree unlawful possession of an assault firearm, second-degree certain persons not to possess firearms and third-degree unlawful possession of firearms manufactured without a serial number, Murray said.
In pleading guilty, Alfred Scarpa admitted to possessing a handgun without a valid carry permit. He also admitted to possessing an assault rifle, which is a prohibited firearm under New Jersey law, and he admitted to possessing firearms that had been made from parts manufactured without a valid serial number.
Scarpa further admitted to possessing these firearms in violation of New Jersey law which prohibits certain persons from legally possessing any type of firearm. These offenses occurred on May 31, 2023, and took place in Frankford Township, Murray said.
These charges resulted from an investigation by the New Jersey State Police.
Alfred Scarpa was represented by Matthew Young, Esq., and the State was represented by Special Deputy Attorney General and Acting Assistant Prosecutor Jerome Neidhardt.
