Man struck, killed on I-287 exit ramp in Somerset County, state police say

BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — A 22-year-old Bridgewater man was struck and killed Saturday night after an SUV hit his disabled vehicle on Interstate 287 in Somerset County, according to New Jersey State Police.

Troopers responded at 9:45 p.m. to a motor vehicle crash on I-287 north at milepost 14.4 in Bridgewater Township, NJSP spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, Vince M. Veglatte, 22, of Bridgewater, was operating a Chevrolet passenger vehicle on exit ramp 14B from I-287 north to U.S. Route 22 west when the vehicle became disabled in the left lane of travel, Lebron said.

Veglatte exited the vehicle and was standing outside when a GMC SUV struck the rear of the Chevrolet and then struck him, police said.

Veglatte sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, authorities said.

A passenger in the Chevrolet, the driver of the GMC and two passengers in the GMC sustained minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and no additional information was available, police said.
