Morris County Sheriff’s Office mourns death of nationally recognized K-9 Kai

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — The Morris County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of K-9 Kai, the nationally recognized Belgian Malinois who served alongside Detective Corporal Mike McMahon and became known across the country for his law enforcement work and championship canine competition career.

Kai died Friday evening, according to Sheriff James M. Gannon and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office. He was 10 years old.

“REMEMBERING K-9 KAI; THE DOG, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND,” the sheriff’s office wrote in announcing Kai’s passing.

Born Dec. 26, 2015, Kai was raised and trained by McMahon from the time he was a 6-week-old puppy. Kai’s father, Ronan, had also served as McMahon’s patrol dog with the sheriff’s office.

Throughout his career, Kai was trained in patrol operations, obedience, tracking, evidence recovery, criminal apprehension and narcotics detection.

Officials described Kai as possessing an exceptional “on/off switch,” allowing him to perform at an elite level during police work while maintaining a calm demeanor off duty.

Following certification, Kai became a key member of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, assisting in numerous investigations and narcotics operations throughout the county.

“As Kai’s experience grew, so did his reputation throughout both the law enforcement community and among the residents he served,” the sheriff’s office said. “Admired for his discipline, reliability, and relentless work ethic, Kai became widely respected as more than just a K-9 officer, but became a symbol of professionalism, courage, and partnership within the Morris County Sheriff’s Office.”

Kai and McMahon also gained national attention in 2020 after competing on A&E’s “America’s Top Dog,” where they defeated law enforcement and civilian K-9 teams from across the country to win the televised competition.

During one obstacle course challenge, Kai reportedly completed the course more than a minute faster than the next closest competitor.

“In the end, Team Kai emerged victorious, earning the title of ‘America’s Top Dog,’” the sheriff’s office said.

Beyond law enforcement, Kai and McMahon earned numerous awards and certifications through the United States Police Canine Association and Protection Sports Association competitions.

In 2022, Kai became only the 32nd K-9 in history to achieve PSA Level 3 certification, the highest title within the organization.

In reflecting on Kai’s legacy, Sheriff Gannon praised both Kai and the McMahon family for their dedication and service.

“We were so very fortunate to have the team of Mike McMahon and Kai in service in our County. Such a great team made up of a true expert handler-trainer, and a top dog,” Sheriff Gannon stated. “Mike’s wife Michele McMahon is an equally adept dog trainer and greatly contributed to this wonderful dog’s ability. Morris County is grateful for all their service. Rest easy Kai.”

Officials said Kai was more than a working dog to the sheriff’s office and McMahon family.

“Kai will be missed; he was simply the best,” the sheriff’s office said.
