Morris County Surrogate Darling discusses estate planning with East Hanover seniors

EAST HANOVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Morris County Surrogate Heather Darling recently met with about 100 East Hanover seniors as part of her ongoing series of in-person seminars across the county.

Darling discussed several topics during the standing-room-only event, including the process of probating a will through the Morris County Surrogate’s Office and the importance of estate planning.

“Without a plan, state laws may control your assets,” said Darling. “It is my focus to raise awareness about estate planning and to encourage Morris County residents to create a will or update the one they have,” said Surrogate Darling.

Darling’s seminars are designed to provide information about the Morris County Surrogate’s Office and its services while helping people understand the importance of creating a will and keeping their estate planning documents up to date.

Attendees received copies of “A Citizens Guide to Wills, Trusts and Estates” and a “Personal Record,” both created by the Morris County Surrogate’s Court.

The Personal Record allows people to document important personal information that could be needed during an emergency and is intended to serve as a guide for family members or an executor.

Both publications are available for download through the Morris County Surrogate’s Office website.

Darling plans to continue offering seminars on estate planning and other topics throughout Morris County. Groups interested in having Darling speak can find additional information at morrissurrogate.com.
