Morris Park Alliance launches shoe drive fundraiser to support tree replanting

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — The Morris Park Alliance is launching a two-month shoe drive fundraiser to support tree replanting efforts across the Morris County park system.

The “Shoes to Saplings” fundraiser will run from March 22 through May 22, with proceeds benefiting the Alliance’s Tree Treasury program, which helps replace trees lost to invasive species such as the Emerald Ash Borer and Beech Tree Nematode.

The organization will receive funding based on the total weight of gently worn, used and new shoes collected. Donations will be processed through partner organization Funds2Orgs, which provides payments for the collected items.

“We are excited about our shoe drive,” said Marlene Caprio, board president. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate. By doing so, we raise money for the Morris Park Alliance, and we have the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Donated shoes will be distributed through Funds2Orgs’ network of micro-enterprise partners in developing countries, where they are resold to support small businesses and provide income for families.

Organizers said the initiative also helps reduce waste by keeping shoes out of landfills.

Collection sites include the Morris County Cultural Center, William G. Mennen Sports Arena, Haggerty Education Center at Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm beginning April 1, and the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center, with additional locations expected.

Funds raised will help supplement the Morris County Park Commission’s budget, which officials said is not fully supported by tax revenue, and support ongoing environmental restoration efforts.
