Morristown Medical Center among first in U.S. to use AI-powered portable MRI for brain imaging
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Morris County) — Atlantic Health’s Morristown Medical Center has become one of the first hospitals in the nation to deploy Hyperfine’s next-generation, AI-powered portable MRI system for brain imaging, marking what officials call a major step forward in bedside diagnostic technology.
Hospital leaders said the new device is already being used in intensive care units and emergency departments, allowing clinicians to capture diagnostic-quality images without transporting critically ill patients.
Hyperfine, a health technology company, developed the first FDA-cleared AI-powered portable MRI for the brain and recently launched the next-generation Swoop® system with Optive AI™ software, which enhances image clarity and speed.
“For the first time, we can now bring MRI technology directly to the patient’s bedside,” said Yaron Moshel, MD, PhD, director of neurosurgery at Atlantic Health and chair of neurosurgery at Morristown Medical Center. “This means quicker answers, less risk from moving critically ill patients, and the ability to deliver the safest and most advanced care for patients with brain tumors, strokes, or serious head injuries.”
The next-generation Swoop system is engineered to deliver a high signal-to-noise ratio and, combined with Optive AI software, provides improved image resolution, uniformity and faster acquisition times. Hospital officials say the system accommodates a wide range of patients and is especially beneficial for pediatric, elderly or anxious individuals who may struggle with traditional MRI procedures.
“This technology allows us to make faster, safer, and more exact time-sensitive decisions in critical moments, enhancing our ability to manage life-threatening conditions and deliver the highest level of neurosurgical care,” said Kiwon Lee, MD, chairman of neurology at Morristown Medical Center and Atlantic Health medical director of neuro critical care. “This technological advancement positions Morristown Medical Center at the forefront of innovation, ensuring that our patients benefit from cutting-edge diagnostics exactly when and where they are needed most.”
Officials said the adoption of the portable MRI system expands access to advanced neuroimaging and may help reshape emergency and critical-care workflows nationwide.
