Mount Olive police warn residents of phone scam involving spoofed calls

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Township police are warning residents about a fraudulent phone scam in which callers pose as the chief of police and attempt to obtain banking information.

The scam involves spoofing caller ID so the number appears to originate from the Mount Olive Police Department. Authorities said scammers have been providing personal details to convince residents the calls are legitimate before requesting financial information.

Police advised anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and contact the department directly at 973-691-0850 to confirm its legitimacy.

Officials reminded residents to never share personal information over the phone without first verifying the caller’s identity through an official website or phone number.
