NJ Transit adds ‘early getaway’ service for Labor Day weekend, extends kids ride free program
NEW JERSEY — NJ Transit will add rail and bus service Friday, Sept. 4, to accommodate travelers getting an early start on the Labor Day weekend, while extending its Family SuperSaver Fare through Tuesday morning.
The agency’s “early getaway” service will include additional outbound trains and buses Friday afternoon. NJ Transit is encouraging customers to check schedules in advance because some trains will be canceled or combined to accommodate changes in ridership.
From approximately 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, extra outbound trains will operate on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris & Essex and Main/Bergen County/Port Jervis lines. Some stops and connections at Secaucus Junction and Newark Penn Station will also be adjusted.
Additional buses will operate from the Port Authority Bus Terminal beginning around noon Friday, with adjustments planned for more than two dozen routes. Routes 137, between Toms River and New York, and 319, between New York, Atlantic City and Cape May, will operate on enhanced schedules Friday through Monday.
Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, Newark Light Rail and River LINE will operate on regular weekday schedules Friday.
NJ Transit’s Family SuperSaver Fare will also be extended for the holiday weekend. The program allows up to two children ages 11 and younger to ride free with each fare-paying adult. For Labor Day weekend, the offer will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8.
On Saturday, Sept. 5, and Sunday, Sept. 6, trains will operate on regular weekend schedules. Bus service will follow Saturday and Sunday schedules, with some additional buses planned to accommodate holiday crowds. Light rail systems will operate regular weekend service.
The DoorDash Meadowlands Rail Line will operate Friday and Saturday evenings to accommodate passengers traveling to and from Ed Sheeran concerts at MetLife Stadium.
On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, trains will operate on weekend or major holiday schedules across all lines. An additional train will leave Port Jervis at 4:05 p.m., making all stops to Suffern before operating express to Secaucus and Hoboken.
Most bus service Monday will operate on Saturday or Sunday schedules. Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate on a weekend schedule, Newark Light Rail will follow a Saturday schedule and River LINE will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule.
NJ Transit advised customers to allow additional travel time during the holiday weekend, particularly on bus routes affected by traffic on the Garden State Parkway or near the Lincoln Tunnel.
Customers are encouraged to check current schedules before traveling and purchase tickets in advance through the NJ Transit mobile app, ticket vending machines or ticket agents. Passengers departing by bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal must purchase tickets before boarding.
