Open-road toll project to start at New Hope-Lambertville Toll Bridge; single-lane travel begins June 23
LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced that construction will begin June 23 on a major project at the New Hope-Lambertville (Route 202) Toll Bridge, requiring single-lane travel in each direction into 2026.
The work will remove the former cash toll plaza and install an overhead toll gantry equipped for all-electronic tolling (AET). Crews will also repair the bridge’s cracked and shifting Pennsylvania abutment backwall.
Motorists are urged to slow down and prepare for lane shifts near the bridge, where one of two lanes will remain open in each direction during construction. Southbound wide loads will be prohibited during gantry construction. Travel delays are not expected.
The $11.86 million project, awarded to PFK-Mark III, Inc. of Newtown, Pa., includes the demolition of the old plaza, installation of a monopole gantry, and replacement of drainage systems and median barriers. All work is expected to be completed by late winter or early spring 2027.
When finished, this will be the first Commission bridge to fully replace a former cash toll plaza with a highway-speed AET facility, serving as a prototype for future conversions.
The bridge, which opened in 1971, carried an average of 13,800 vehicles daily in 2024, with more than 92% of transactions using E-ZPass.
