Phillipsburg police seek third suspect in shots fired investigation

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — Phillipsburg police are seeking a third suspect in connection with an Aug. 31, 2025, shots fired investigation.

Police said officers were dispatched Aug. 31, 2025, to the 3000 block of Rand Boulevard for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a crime scene and a suspect vehicle occupied by two individuals. Two arrests were made at the scene.

Following an extensive investigation that included witness statements and the execution of search warrants, police identified Justin J. Makuta, 22, as a third suspect in the incident.

Makuta is charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and tampering with evidence, according to police. Authorities said his whereabouts are currently unknown, though he may be in the Allentown, Pennsylvania, area. He was last known to reside in the 1100 block of Oak Street.

Police advised the public not to approach Makuta, who should be considered armed and dangerous, and to call 911 immediately with any information on his whereabouts.
