Pilot escapes injury after small jet crashes into lake in Passaic County

WEST MILFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Passaic County) — A pilot escaped injury after a small jet crashed into a lake Saturday evening in West Milford Township, according to local and federal authorities.

Police and firefighters were dispatched at approximately 6 p.m. to Green Turtle Lake, located on New Jersey State Park property in the Awosting section of the township, after receiving reports of an aircraft in the water.

According to West Milford police, the pilot was able to exit the aircraft without assistance and declined medical treatment at the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a SubSonex JSX-2 crashed into the pond at approximately 6:30 p.m. The pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft.

New Jersey State Park Police are investigating the incident, while the FAA has also opened an investigation into the crash.

Federal Aviation Administration records identify the aircraft’s registered owner as Mini Jet Airshows LLC of South Daytona, Florida.
