RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon county) — Data centers are now prohibited throughout Raritan Township after the Township Committee recently adopted an ordinance amending the municipality’s Land Development Code.
The ordinance adds data centers to the township’s list of prohibited uses, banning them in all zoning districts. The amended code also specifies that warehouses, flex spaces and research facilities cannot include data centers.
The ordinance establishes a distinction for businesses and other permitted uses that use computer servers as part of their regular operations.
Accessory server rooms remain permitted when they are located within a principal building and used solely to support the principal use of the property. The server space cannot exceed 10% of the building’s gross floor area or 2,000 square feet, whichever is less.
Mayor Brad Perry and the entire Township Committee supported the ordinance, according to the township.
Township officials said the ordinance is part of Raritan Township’s broader approach to land-use planning and establishing regulations that reflect the community’s long-term planning objectives.
