NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — A gas leak at a vacant home on Main Street in Newton prompted a mutual aid response Wednesday afternoon after officials learned natural gas may have been leaking into the residence for several days.
The Newton Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the home at approximately 12:30 p.m.
According to the department, firefighters arrived and were told by a realtor at the scene that natural gas service had been restored to the residence about four days earlier and that gas was believed to have been leaking into the home since that time.
Because of the reported duration of the leak, additional firefighters and mutual aid from the Andover Township Volunteer Fire Department were requested.
Firefighters monitored the atmosphere inside the home, shut off the gas supply at the meter and ventilated the structure to remove the accumulated natural gas.
Once the residence was deemed safe, the scene was turned over to Elizabethtown Gas for further investigation and restoration of service.
All units cleared the scene at approximately 1:10 p.m. No injuries were reported.
