Rescued pup Remo, adopted by NJ state trooper, becomes hero bringing comfort and joy to Sussex County community

SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — Meet Remo, the rescued pup who’s quickly become a beloved hero in more ways than one.

In March 2024, New Jersey State Police Troop “B” Sussex Troopers responded to a call about a severely malnourished dog in need of immediate care. The dog, later named Remo, was rescued and brought to safety by officers. After two months of rehabilitation under the care of Newton Animal Control, Remo made a full recovery and was ready for a new chapter in his life.

In May, the Newton Police Department gifted Remo to the Sussex Station, where he was officially adopted by Trooper Ryan Dichiara. Since then, Remo has become an integral and beloved member of the station team.

Beyond his role as a station mascot, Remo has helped uplift the spirits of the troopers and visitors alike. His calming presence has been especially therapeutic for people in distress. For instance, when a woman from Capitol Care visited the station in a distressed state, her demeanor noticeably improved after meeting Remo. He has also been a source of comfort for children who come to the station with their parents during difficult times, offering a friendly wag of his tail to bring comfort and cheer.

Recently, Remo made a special visit to SCARC (Sussex County Association for Retarded Citizens), a nonprofit organization that provides support to individuals with developmental disabilities. Each day, five SCARC clients come to Sussex Station to assist with janitorial services, and Remo greets them with enthusiasm and affection. Over time, the bond between Remo and the clients grew so strong that SCARC invited him to visit their home office, where he met even more clients and spread his signature warmth and kindness.

In just six months, Remo has had a significant positive impact on the lives of many people in Sussex County. Whether boosting morale at the police station, comforting a troubled visitor, or bringing joy to individuals with developmental disabilities, Remo has proven to be a source of love, support, and community spirit.
