Retired detective to speak at Hunterdon County 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony
FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Retired Detective John Mulligan will serve as the guest speaker at the Hunterdon County 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 11, Sheriff Fred Brown announced.
Mulligan, a nearly 35-year Hunterdon County resident, recently retired from the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office after a 37-year career in law enforcement. His service began in the U.S. Marine Corps and continued as a Special Agent with the FBI, where he worked in the New York City and Newark field offices as well as overseas posts in high-threat areas. He later served as deputy chief of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice and as an investigator with the Essex County and Hunterdon County prosecutors’ offices.
Throughout his career, Mulligan earned honors including induction into the NYPD Honor Legion, valor awards from the Jersey City Police Department and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, and the 2007 Federal Law Enforcement Investigator of the Year award. He also received the FBI Director’s Award for extraordinary service during a deployment to Karachi, Pakistan.
“John Mulligan is the embodiment of public service and bravery,” Brown said. “His life’s work reflects the very values we seek to honor at our 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony — courage, sacrifice, and a commitment to protecting others. We are privileged to have him share his story and perspective with our community.”
The ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the Hunterdon County Justice Center. It will honor the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and pay tribute to the first responders, military personnel, and civilians who showed heroism that day. The event is open to the public.
