Several cops injured in Morris County motel riot: Police

HANOVER TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – Five people are facing riot and other charges after a large fight in a Hanover Township motel that ended with several police officers injured last month, according to police.

On Friday, Aug. 16, three Hanover Township police officers were at the Red Carpet Inn, located at 1255 Route 10, investigating a complaint of harassment and threats allegedly made to a motel resident from another resident, police said.

While police were questioning the suspect(s), one of the officers observed a man light a cigarette in the hallway and he had been advised multiple times in the past that he could not smoke inside the motel. The officer told him that he would receive a summons, and he then tried to flee into a room, authorities said.

When the officer grabbed his arm to prevent him from entering the room, he began to resist. His wife and daughter then became unruly toward the officers by yelling threats and profanity and trying to pull the officers away so they could not detain him, police said.

The other officers attempted to arrest the daughter and that is when two other men, who are residents of the motel, attacked the officers to prevent them from arresting the woman, police said.

A large fight ensued in the hallway and the officers then called for assistance. Additional Hanover Township police officers responded along with multiple officers from surrounding jurisdictions and ultimately the scene was made secure. Three men and two women were arrested, police said.

Several of Hanover Township police officers received injuries, but none requiring medical attention, police said.

The following were charged:

  • Luis Pabon, 34, was charged with aggravated assault on police, resisting arrest, riot, obstruction, failure to disperse, violent disorderly conduct and smoking in public.
  • Aaliyah Rodriguez, 18, was charged with terroristic threats, resisting arrest, riot, obstruction, failure to disperse and violent disorderly conduct.
  • Annamarie Rodriguez, 35, was charged with riot, failure to disperse, obstruction and violent disorderly conduct.
  • Dawan Portis, 20, was charged with aggravated assault on police, resisting arrest, riot, obstruction, failure to disperse and violent disorderly conduct
  • Ahmir Portis, 18, was charged with aggravated assault on police, resisting arrest, riot, obstruction, failure to disperse and violent disorderly conduct.

All three males were lodged in the Morris County Jail awaiting a detention hearing. The two females were released pending court appearances, police said.
