Several Northwest New Jersey law enforcement agencies plan targeted Labor Day weekend traffic enforcement
NORTHWEST, N.J. — Several law enforcement agencies across Northwest New Jersey will conduct targeted, high-visibility traffic enforcement throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend, focusing on aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving and driving while intoxicated.
The coordinated enforcement effort includes the Hackettstown, Roxbury Township, Washington Township, Mount Olive Township, Stanhope, Chester Township, Byram Township and Netcong police departments, along with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office.
The initiative is aimed at keeping roadways safe during one of the busiest and most dangerous travel periods of the year.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 511 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide during the 2023 Labor Day holiday weekend. Thirty-six percent of those fatalities involved a drunk driver, and 62% of the drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes had a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or higher, nearly twice the legal limit.
New Jersey State Police data shows 41 people were killed on New Jersey roadways during the five Labor Day holiday periods from 2019 through 2023.
Motorists are reminded to never drive impaired and to designate a sober driver or use a rideshare service. Drivers should also obey speed limits, avoid aggressive driving, eliminate distractions, wear seat belts on every trip and allow additional travel time during periods of heavy congestion.
The participating agencies are urging motorists to plan ahead and travel safely throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend.
