ShopRite of Newton wins Cheerios contest as stores raise $1.34M for hunger relief

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — ShopRite of Newton has been named the winner of this year’s ShopRite Partners In Caring Cheerios Contest, part of a fundraising effort that generated $1.34 million across ShopRite stores for food banks and hunger-fighting organizations.

The annual competition brings together ShopRite locations to support hunger relief initiatives in their communities. As part of the recognition, four team members from the Newton store were featured on the front of special-edition Cheerios boxes.

Wakefern Member RoNetco Supermarkets, owned and operated by the Romano family, celebrated the Newton team with a special in-store event and presented donations of $40,000 to Norwescap New Jersey and $10,000 to SCARC Inc.

Norwescap serves as a foundation of support to help individuals and families overcome economic hurdles so they can thrive. SCARC is a nonprofit organization supporting people with developmental disabilities and their families in Sussex County.

Officials said the achievement highlights the broader commitment of the Romano family’s nine ShopRite stores in northwest New Jersey to support local communities.

Through the ShopRite Partners In Caring program, the stores contribute to hundreds of organizations, including food pantries, hospitals, schools and first responder groups, helping address food insecurity and strengthen community support networks.
