SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — Sussex County is inviting middle school students to participate in a patriotic essay contest as part of the county’s annual Salute to Military Veterans, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Sussex County Fairgrounds.
The contest is open to Sussex County students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades, including homeschooled students. The program is intended to encourage students to show their support and appreciation for local veterans while learning about the contributions and sacrifices made by members of the military.
This year’s essay topic is, “Why Are We Saluting Sussex County Military Veterans?”
Essays must be 200 words or fewer and written voluntarily by the student. Entries must be submitted by Thursday, Oct. 1, to the Sussex County Division of Senior Services, One Spring Street, Newton, NJ 07860.
Each submission must include the student’s name, address, phone number and grade, along with the school name and the name and phone number of a school point of contact.
Members of the Sussex County Veterans Committee will review and judge the entries. Two winners will be selected, with each receiving $200 and an invitation to read their essay during the Nov. 1 veterans salute. Permission to publish the winning essays is required.
Winners, their parents and their schools will be contacted by the contest chair after selections are made.
The annual Salute to Military Veterans is organized by the Sussex County Board of County Commissioners, Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services and Sussex County Veterans Committee to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of military veterans.
