Sussex County man charged with sexually assaulting juvenile in Fair Lawn in early 1990s

FAIR LAWN BOROUGH, N.J. (Bergen County) — A 73-year-old Vernon Township man has been charged with sexually assaulting a juvenile multiple times in Fair Lawn more than three decades ago, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Peter F. Knipe was arrested Thursday in Fair Lawn following a joint investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Fair Lawn Police Department.

Authorities said the investigation began May 26 after the Fair Lawn Police Department notified the prosecutor’s office of an alleged sexual assault involving a juvenile that occurred in the past.

Investigators determined Knipe allegedly sexually assaulted the juvenile on more than one occasion in Fair Lawn between Dec. 2, 1990, and Dec. 31, 1991, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Knipe is charged with one count of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and three counts of second-degree sexual assault.

He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
