Sussex County’s Hef’s Hut serves 18-slider challenge on National Cheeseburger Day

VERNON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — Hef’s Hut at the Great Gorge is raising the stakes for National Cheeseburger Day with a deal for casual diners and a gut-busting challenge for the bold.

On Thursday, Sept. 18, the bar and grill will offer cheeseburgers at half price all day. But for those with serious appetites, the spotlight is on the 18-Slider Challenge — a test that dares guests to eat 18 cheeseburger sliders in 30 minutes.

Winners who finish the hefty sliders, buns included, not only eat for free but also earn their choice of a local adventure: a round at the Great Gorge Golf Club, a round at 1Club Park Golf or a climb at TreEscape Aerial Adventure Park.

“These are hefty sliders, so downing all 18, buns and all, in less than 30 minutes is no easy feat,” said David Killin, general manager of the Great Gorge. “Appetites and determination are required, the latter of which I believe will be helpful after anyone daring enough gets through to the back nine of the slider challenge.”

Hef’s Hut, a growing hotspot for locals, golfers and visitors, is known for its signature cocktails, bold menu and sweeping views of Vernon Valley. The restaurant sits beside the Great Gorge Golf Club and is part of a lineup of outdoor experiences that includes Fazio-designed courses, New Jersey’s only 1Club Park Golf course and the TreEscape aerial ropes course.

The challenge carries a $90 price tag for those who attempt it and fail to finish. The rules are strict: no sharing, no leftovers and a hard 30-minute limit.
