Tractor-trailer hauling pesticide overturns on I-78 in Somerset County; minor injuries reported

WARREN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — A tractor-trailer carrying carbonate pesticide overturned early Saturday morning on Interstate 78 westbound, prompting a hazardous materials response and lane closures, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 6:20 a.m. at milepost 37.4 in Warren Township, State Police Sgt. Charles Marchan said.

A preliminary investigation determined that the tractor-trailer was traveling west on I-78 when it lost directional control, veered off the roadway, struck an exit sign and a light pole, and overturned.

The truck’s cargo, carbonate pesticide, required specialized handling. Crews from the Somerset County Hazmat Team and the Warren Township Fire Department responded and offloaded the material to prevent further risk.

Minor injuries were reported at the scene, authorities said.

All lanes of I-78 westbound were temporarily closed, with traffic diverted at Exit 36 to allow for cleanup and recovery operations. The incident remains under investigation, and no additional details were immediately available.
