Two I-80 eastbound lanes reopen in Wharton Borough; two westbound lanes reopening expected next week
WHARTON BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — Two eastbound lanes on Interstate 80 in Wharton reopened Wednesday night around 10 p.m., marking a major milestone in the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (NJDOT) emergency highway repairs. The reopening eliminates the need for the I-80 eastbound detour at Exit 34.
Work continues on the westbound side of I-80, with two lanes expected to reopen by the end of next week. The westbound detour at Exit 34B remains in place, and all lanes in both directions are scheduled to reopen by June 25.
“This is the first step in restoring full mobility on this critical interstate highway,” said Gov. Phil Murphy. “I want to commend NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor and NJDOT crews for their tireless work to safely reopen this roadway.”
Murphy also acknowledged the partnership of the New Jersey State Police and local officials in managing detour traffic, and expressed gratitude to residents and commuters impacted by the disruptions, which stemmed from multiple sinkholes along the highway.
The speed limit has been reduced to 40 mph through the eastbound work zone, and motorists are advised to use caution as the area remains an active construction site.
NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor thanked state officials, local leaders, and residents for their patience, and praised the NJDOT team and contractors for working around the clock for several months.
“It is important for motorists to understand that a lot of work remains,” O’Connor said. “For everyone’s safety, please slow down and obey reduced speed limits.”
Legislators also voiced appreciation for the progress.
Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco called the reopening “a welcome step forward,” while also urging caution as drivers resume their regular routines. “Safety must remain a top priority,” he said.
Assemblywoman Aura K. Dunn said the progress demonstrates effective government action. “When government delivers results, people deserve to see it, and this is one of those moments,” she said.
Assemblyman Christian Barranco echoed that sentiment, while also calling for continued vigilance in the work zone. “Take advantage of progress, but remain cautious,” he said.
Crews continue working 24/7 on the westbound side. Concrete slabs are currently curing before sealant can be applied and multiple layers of asphalt are paved. Weather conditions, including rain, could affect the timeline. Once completed, striping and the installation of barrier curbs will follow.
In the median, rebar installation and framing are underway, and concrete pouring has begun on some of the six median slabs.
