United Way of Hunterdon County launches first Born Learning Trail with ExxonMobil support

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Laughter, bright colors, and the energy of possibility filled the steps of United Way of Hunterdon County’s Volunteer Center this week as the nonprofit unveiled the county’s first Born Learning Trail, an interactive path that turns everyday moments into early learning opportunities.

The trail was made possible through a partnership with ExxonMobil, whose employees donated materials and volunteered to install the features on-site. “This is what community looks like—corporate partners rolling up their sleeves, neighbors showing up, and kids learning right where they live,” said Jennifer Thompson, CEO of United Way of Hunterdon County. “The Born Learning Trail makes it easy for parents and caregivers to be a child’s first teacher—no app required, just curiosity and a little time together. ExxonMobil’s partnership shows what happens when companies invest in both people and place.”

Developed through United Way Worldwide’s Born Learning initiative, the trail consists of 10 signs that prompt families to talk, count, move, and imagine—simple activities that build early literacy as well as social and emotional skills. The project aligns with United Way of Hunterdon County’s mission to help families thrive, including residents in the ALICE (Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed) population who often balance work and childcare.

ExxonMobil staff painted, assembled, and installed the elements at the Volunteer Center, transforming the front steps into a colorful learning space. “This project was about more than building something physical,” said one ExxonMobil volunteer. “It’s about building opportunity—for parents to engage, for kids to explore, and for the community to come together.”

United Way officials said the debut trail is a model for future installations across Hunterdon County in parks, schoolyards, and community hubs. The organization is inviting corporations and civic groups to sponsor additional trails or organize volunteer teams to expand access to playful learning.
