UPDATE: Authorities release information on officer-involved shooting in Sussex County

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ (Sussex County) – The Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey State Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Jan. 13, at around 3:30 p.m. in Byram Township.

The preliminary investigation reveals that, in response to a 911 call, Byram Township Police Officers arrived at the intersection of Camp Wheeler Road and Camp Allamuchy Road. There, officers made contact with the sole occupant of a vehicle parked at the location. The occupant was armed with a handgun.

Officers attempted to deescalate the situation, including utilizing a crisis negotiator, but these efforts were unsuccessful.

During the encounter, the occupant exited the vehicle and was struck once by police gunfire. The occupant’s firearm was also discharged during the incident and was subsequently recovered. The State Police Crime Scene Unit North processed the scene.

All firearms involved were secured, and the vehicle was also secured. Contrary to earlier media reports, no items were found attached to the roof of the vehicle.

The occupant, an adult female, was rendered aid immediately and transported to Hackettstown Medical Center for treatment. She is currently in stable condition.

The officers involved in the incident were transported to Newton Medical Center for evaluation and treatment.

Acting Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Byram Township Police Chief Daniel J. Dewald stated that the names of both the occupant and the involved officers are being withheld at this time.

The facts and circumstances of the incident are still under investigation by the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and the State Police. No further information is being released at this time, officials said.
