143,000 pounds of bologna recalled nationwide due to misbranding

Gaiser’s European Style Provisions Inc., a Union, New Jersey-based company, is recalling more than 143,000 pounds of ready-to-eat bologna due to misbranding and undeclared meat and poultry ingredients, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Friday.

Approximately 143,416 pounds of various bologna products produced between March 20 and June 20, 2025, are affected. The recall was initiated after FSIS was notified of a complaint received through the USDA Office of Inspector General’s hotline. An investigation determined that the products contained meat and poultry ingredients not listed on their labels.

The recalled items include:

  • “Family Tree Bologna Veal” containing undeclared pork
  • “Babushka’s Recipe Chicken Bologna” containing undeclared pork
  • “Fancy Bologna” labeled with pork but also containing undeclared beef and chicken
  • “Gaiser’s Russian Brand Doktorskaya Bologna” containing undeclared beef
  • “Gaiser’s Bologna Veal” containing undeclared chicken and pork
  • “Gaiser’s Turkey Bologna” containing undeclared chicken and pork
  • “Chicken Bologna Kypoyka Paba” containing undeclared pork

The products were distributed to wholesale and retail locations nationwide. They bear the establishment number “EST. 5385” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Some products may have been repackaged and relabeled at retail locations.

Although no confirmed reports of illness have been linked to the recall, FSIS urges consumers who may have purchased the affected products not to eat them. The items should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. Restaurants and institutions are also urged not to serve the products.

FSIS classified the recall as Class III, meaning the likelihood of adverse health consequences is low. However, consumers with concerns should contact a healthcare provider.

Questions about the recall can be directed to Steven Shuchinski, manager at Gaiser’s, at (908) 686-3421 or gaisers@verizon.net. Food safety inquiries can also be made to the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or MPHotline@usda.gov.
