2 ejected in multi-vehicle crash involving tractor-trailer on I-80 in Morris County

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – Two people were seriously injured following a multi-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 in Morris County Monday evening, according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sergeant Charles Marchan.

The crash occurred around 7:37 a.m. on Interstate 80 westbound at milepost 35.2 in Rockaway Township, Marchan said.

Based on a preliminary investigation, a Chevrolet pickup truck hauling an enclosed box trailer, a Toyota passenger car, a Ford pickup truck, a Ford box truck, a GMC dump truck, and an International tractor-trailer were all traveling west on I-80. In the area of milepost 35.2, the Chevrolet, Toyota, Ford pickup, Ford box truck, and GMC were slowing for traffic. The tractor-trailer impacted the rear of the GMC. As a result of the crash, the GMC struck the rear of the Ford pickup. The Ford pickup was redirected to the right and struck the Ford box truck. The GMC then struck the rear of the Toyota, causing the Toyota to strike the rear of the Chevrolet trailer.

The driver of the GMC, Saloman Cespedes, 61, of East Orange, and passenger Jose Cuzco-Aluiso, 44, were both ejected and sustained serious injuries, Marchan said.

The crash remains under investigation, Marchan added.
