Closure necessary to reconstruct exit ramp
CLINTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) – The I-78 eastbound Exit 17 ramp to Route 31 southbound is closed this weekend as pavement reconstruction work continues in Clinton, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced.
The closure began at 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 2 and is scheduled to remain in effect until 12:00 noon on Monday, May 5. The closure is part of the ongoing Route 31, I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project.
A detour is in place:
- Motorists on I-78 eastbound looking to take Exit 17 to Route 31 southbound should use Exit 16 to Route 31 northbound/Washington.
- At the traffic signal, turn right onto Center Street, which becomes an on-ramp to Route 31 southbound.
The $24.8 million federally funded project includes full-depth asphalt reconstruction, intersection realignment, drainage improvements, guiderail replacement, lighting upgrades, and bridge deck repairs. Completion is expected by fall 2026.
