Hackettstown driver mistakes driveway for street, crashes into house and rolls car

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Warren County) — A 71-year-old woman was injured Monday night after her vehicle struck her home and rolled onto its side in the 900 block of Grand Avenue, according to police.

At approximately 10:12 p.m., Hackettstown police, fire, and first aid crews responded to a motor vehicle crash with entrapment, police said.

An investigation found the woman backed out of her garage into the driveway, closed the garage door, then accelerated forward at an increased speed. The vehicle hit the left front corner of the residence, causing significant damage, before rolling over and coming to rest on the driver’s side, trapping her inside.

Police said the woman thought she was already on the street when she accelerated. She was extricated and taken to Hackettstown Medical Center with minor injuries.

The Mount Olive Fire Marshal and Jersey Central Power & Light assisted at the scene.
