Two lanes on I-78 eastbound to close Saturday for bridge work in Somerset County

SOMERSET COUNTY, N.J. — The two left lanes of Interstate 78 eastbound are scheduled to be closed Saturday, July 26, as part of the ongoing deck replacement project on the I-78 westbound bridges over Routes 202/206 and Washington Valley Road in Bedminster and Bridgewater, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The closures will take place from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. between mileposts 30 and 32.2 to allow for deck panel repairs on the new bridges. At least two lanes will remain open to traffic on I-78 eastbound during the work.

In addition to the lane closures, a temporary stop sign will be in place at the end of the I-287 southbound Exit 21A ramp to I-78 eastbound. The I-287 northbound Exit 21A ramp to I-78 eastbound will remain open throughout the day.

The $70 million federally funded project is replacing both eastbound and westbound bridge decks on I-78, which span Routes 202/206 and Washington Valley Road. The bridges are currently in poor condition. The project also includes new approach slabs, guiderail upgrades to meet current standards, and resurfacing within the project limits.

Construction began with the eastbound bridges and is being staged to minimize traffic disruptions. Completion of all bridge work is anticipated by late spring 2026.

Variable message signs will alert drivers to traffic changes. NJDOT advises motorists to visit 511nj.org for real-time travel updates and construction alerts. All work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled as necessary.
