Warren County sheriff warns of jury duty phone scam
WARREN COUNTY, N.J. — The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate law enforcement officers and threaten arrest over missed jury duty.
Sheriff James J. McDonald Sr. said a scammer posing as “Sgt. Mark Williams” from the Sheriff’s Office has called residents, falsely claiming they missed federal jury duty and faced immediate arrest unless they traveled to Belvidere.
Officials said the caller sounded official, included a beep and delay at the start of the call, knew the victim’s name, and applied heavy pressure despite not requesting money.
“Scammers are getting more sophisticated,” McDonald said in a public notice.
The Sheriff’s Office advised residents not to share personal information, not to travel or follow directions from such callers, and to hang up and verify the claim with official sources.
Anyone receiving a suspicious call is urged to contact the Warren County Sheriff’s Office at 908-475-6309.
