Phillipsburg Police Department mourns loss of Detective Sgt. Brett Marino

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — The Phillipsburg Police Department is mourning the loss of Detective Sergeant Brett Marino #321, a respected 13-year veteran whose dedication, leadership, and compassion left a lasting mark on his colleagues and the community he served.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Phillipsburg Police Department announces the passing of Detective Sergeant Brett Marino #321,” the department said in a statement on Friday morning.

Det. Sgt. Marino joined the department more than a decade ago and quickly distinguished himself through his talent, work ethic, and commitment to justice. His skill and leadership earned him a position as a Detective in the Special Operations Division, a specialized unit focused on investigating narcotics and street crime offenses.

“In that role, Brett’s commitment to protecting our community and seeking justice never wavered,” the department said.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, colleagues described Marino as a beloved friend and mentor, known for his humor, optimism, and steadfast presence.

“To those who knew him, Brett was far more than a police officer,” the department’s statement continued. “He was everyone’s best friend, the one who could make you laugh when you needed it most, the steady voice of reason when chaos loomed, and the kind of person who made every room brighter simply by being in it. His courage, iconic humor, and strength during his battle were nothing short of heroic and inspiring.”

Marino displayed remarkable resilience, continuing to serve and inspire others even through personal challenges.

He bravely battled cancer with unwavering determination. “While doctors offered a six-month prognosis, Brett refused to accept it, fighting with everything he had for nearly two years, demonstrating an unshakable will and warrior’s spirit every step of the way,” the department said.

Det. Sgt. Marino is survived by his wife, four children, three brothers, one sister, and many close relatives, as well as his extended family in blue, who said they will forever honor his memory.

“To our community, thank you for being with us and please join in keeping Sergeant Marino, his family, and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this unimaginably difficult time,” the Phillipsburg Police Department said.
