HUNTERDON COUNTY, N.J. — Hunterdon County Commissioner Director John E. Lanza joined members of New Jersey’s legal and public service community at the Ryland Inn on Oct. 29 to honor the Honorable Peter G. Verniero, former Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, during the unveiling of his official portrait.

Director Lanza attended the event on behalf of the Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners and presented Justice Verniero with an official proclamation recognizing his distinguished career and lasting contributions to the people of New Jersey.

“Justice Verniero represents the very best of what it means to serve the public — with honor, humility, and an unwavering respect for the law,” said Director Lanza. “His career has strengthened the institutions that protect our freedoms and define our democracy, and it is a privilege to celebrate his contributions on behalf of Hunterdon County and the State of New Jersey.”

The Board’s proclamation commended Justice Verniero for his exemplary record of public service, which includes his tenure as New Jersey Attorney General, his service as Chief Counsel and Chief of Staff to Governor Christine Todd Whitman, and his distinguished years as Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. It praised his “integrity, intellect, and commitment to the rule of law” as defining qualities of his career.

The portrait unveiling also highlighted Justice Verniero’s key role in landmark cases such as Megan’s Law and New Jersey v. New York before the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as his ongoing influence through teaching, mentorship, and civic engagement.

Director Lanza said he was proud to recognize a native New Jerseyan whose career continues to inspire the next generation of legal professionals and public servants.
